Feature: International designer creates image to mark Architecture Week

Nottingham’s famous fashion designer, Sir Paul Smith has created a one-off design for Architecture Week.

This specially created colourful graphic is being used on limited edition t-shirt and canvas bags that will not be available to buy. Only 400 t-shirts and 4500 bags have been produced and are being used nationally by organisers of Architecture Week.

Paul Smith commented: 'I am always happy to be involved in architectural projects as it's not only a love of mine but it's something important to us all. The t-shirt and bag design hopefully portrays the importance of trees and greenery working in urban environments'

A representative from Architecture Week in the East Midlands, which this year has over 90 events, more that 25 in Nottinghamshire itself added ‘We’re very excited that Britain’s most commercially successful designer has contributed to Architecture Week – but it is particularly exciting for us in his home town.’

In the East Midlands AW07 is promoted by the partnership of Arts Council England East Midlands, Royal Institute of British Architects East Midlands, and Opun the Architecture and Built Environment Centre for the East Midlands.

Paul Smith has been involved with Architecture Week in Nottingham previously, in 2005 Sir Paul’s flagship store Willoughby House on High Pavement, a Grade II listed building was officially opened during the Week. The shop’s interior was designed by Sir Paul and complements the 18th century building’s history.

In February this year Sir Paul was presented with an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). These new RIBA Honorary Fellowships reward the particular contributions people have made to architecture in its broadest sense: its promotion, administration and outreach; and its role in building more sustainable communities. The lifetime honour is conferred annually.
